How do you plant asparagus?

I got all these spider roots that is asparagus. I just put them in the ground and covered them with about 4 inches of soil. I heard some where you have to burry it a foot underground is that true?

How do you plant asparagus?
Asparagus likes deep, damp, rich, well-drained soil. Make sure you put a lot of compost in the trench and cover the dirt with mulch. They should be OK with 4 inches of dirt over them. Make sure you feed them well and that you keep them weed free. They are famously "greedy" plants.

I have found with commercially purchased asparagus roots that only a small percentage make it, but once they are established they will go on for ever. There are asparagus beds planted by the Romans that are still producing asparagus! You won't get anything worth eating for 2 - 3 years, but it is worth the wait.
Reply:I have tried to grow it from seed with no luck. It takes at least a couple years or more before it is big enough to eat. So here is what My search came up with.

Reply:I think some people plant them deeper so you can run a tiller over the patch in the late winter.

I'm sure they will grow with 4 inches of soil on top of them. I think a foot is to deep anyway. 6 inches is maybe the best..
Reply:You are OK and in about 2 years you can start eating!
