Does our ficus have a growth? or is there some other problem?

We found this tree in the trash in our apt, it looked as though someone thought that since it was loosing leaves it may be dead. We have repotted, fertilized, and sprayed for spider mites and other creepy crawlies, and it is still not responding. There is a growth at about 6 1/2 inches above the end of the stalk, could this growth be hurting the plant? should we cut it off? It is about 2 x 2, looks like it is of the same material as a knot on a tree. Help us , help our ficus.. [url=http://img3.freeimagehosting.net/im...

Ficus are nortorious for losing it's leaves. This is natural-if you will.Just pick the leaves up when they drop.
