I am at the altar, have killed the giant spider and have also used that exploding plant to break away the cracked rock and get the rupees. What now? The wierd spirit thing on my back just says: oh, look at all the TORCHES, is this some sort of altar, then laughs at me!

i have beaten the game like 3 times and i am a little confused... what altar? if you are in the temple where there are 4 torches you need to find the four spirits in wolf form
