Spiders: How to deter them from my home?

I live in Pennsylvania near the edge of the state forest and we tend to get tons of spiders both inside and on the outside of our home. What can I do to deter them a bit? Are there plants that I could get to help them stay away?

Spiders: How to deter them from my home?
My mom and sister like to put hedgeapples in their attics and basements. I guess the spiders steer clear, esp. of those rooms. The spiders won't completely leave, but the number of spiders is supposed to decrease.
Reply:Spiders are strictly predators, feeding on insects primarily. If you have consistent spiders around your home it's because they are feeding on the other creepy crawlies that would call your home their own.

The best way to get rid of the spiders is to eliminate their food source. Find out what bugs are around that they are feeding on, and get rid of those. Until you get rid of their food, the spiders are actually doing you a huge favour by killing the other bugs. Leave them alone until you find out what the real problem is.
Reply:I heard of people using moth balls, but I don't know. I know someone who used those hedge balls that fall off trees, they're big and green. I don't know if you know what they are, but my grandma and grandpa put them in their basement and I don't see any spiders down there.
Reply:kill them allllll
Reply:hedge apples, we would pick them and put them behind the couch and places around the house out of sight and we had no spiders.they don't like the smell, but they have no odor to humans.
Reply:I lived in Pennsylvania most of my life, in my area hedgeapples were known as monkeyballs if that helps.
