Recently moved to new house and garden is overrun with?

unwanted wildlife, does anyone know why i have never seen anything like it before. there are snails everywhere, theres a lot of bushes and plants but i have had that in previous garden but never so many snails they are on any in everything, likewise the grass seems to be crawling with small spiders, and finally this morning i picked the prop up off the grass which was a bit wet after the rain and it was literally covered in woodlice, anyone know why and what i can do about it? thanks for sensible answers

It is a sign of a healthy garden....insects would not live on one full of pesticides....cut the grass....and get planting....you can put down slug pellets to stop them eating the plants.....
Reply:You could eat the snails if you so desired (see my previous questions), but it probably wouldn't appeal.

I'd put out lots of slug pellets after going through the bushes and picking them out, though like last year, the damp weather will make them a huge problem.

Woodlice can be treated, but I suspect you have a lot of dead wood in your garden, so get rid of that too.

As for the spiders - it is mating season, and they don't do any damage.

Try and encourage birds in the garden too - just not when you use pellets.

Reply:I'd avoid weed killer as it will prevent anything from growing for a while.

Cut back the bushes, cut the grass, try to attract birds etc

keeping the grass short, and letting things dry out will help immensely.

the more sunlight the better.

there are plenty of natural ways to get rid of snails....
Reply:Yes the snails do love moisture and hidding in foliage during the day. You can use egg shells around your plants or diatamish soil to keep them out, it is very irrataiting for them to crawl across. You can make slug traps also, a little beer in a jar lid set out next to the plants and they crawl in get drunk and drown, just empty the traps each day. Spiders you do have to get the birds to come in. A couple of bird houses will do that for you. Any way just clean it up, get some sun down on the soil and it will be fine. I love to garden and always do it as natural as I can
Reply:AVOID WEEDKILLER. That's insane..and a stupid way to go about it. It's akin to nuking a forest to cut down 1 tree. Totally mad. Keep your garden as chemical free as you can. Insects are very good for the garden...woodlice churn up the soil and keep it rich. Spiders are very good for the garden...they kill insects which eat plants...and once you move in they'll move out so don't worry about them. In the meantime squishing a few is ok to reduce their numbers. Just cut back your garden and start afresh.

Reply:Your best best it to upturn the ground and mix in weed killer, you need to get some sun into that area that is why you have so many critters.

They thrive in shaded moist areas. Saturate it with Weed Killer let the sun bake it and loosen up any packed soil.
