I have been told that Marigolds help keep...?

mosquitos somewhat away from where you plant them. Is this true, somewhat true? andy other plants that may help keep bugs and possibly spiders at bay this summer? Thank you.

Reply:Marigolds are distasteful to plant-eating insects and therefore good for your garden to keep pests out. Neither spiders nor mosquitoes eat plants, so it has no effect on them. The marigolds don't keep insects away from people either, only away from the other plants close to them in the garden.
Reply:Very true!

Plant marigolds in you garden and they will help with pesty bugs.
Reply:i hear they keep slugs out too
Reply:as far as keepimg mosquitos away the answer is no mosqiutos thrive near water so no matter what plant you plant they need water, and mosquitos will always follow water...
Reply:There seems to be a lot of debate over the effectiveness of marigolds as insect repellants. My Mom used to grow them and I thought they were the most foul smelling plant ever. And we still had mosquitos. A vegetable gardening book I used to own referenced certain plants to grow to keep away damaging insects. Ones I can remember are marigolds, garlic and onions.

Unless you're deathly afraid of spiders, they can be very beneficial in keeping down other insect populations. You can try luring certain insects from your house by raising plants they are attracted to away from your house.

Depending on where you live, rural vs. urban, a very effective way of keeping mosquito populations down is to put up "bat houses." Bats can feed on thousands of mosquitos every night. I live near wooded areas with a lot of wetlands and yet never see any mosquitos around, which I can only assume is due to the bats around the area.

"Bugs" is a very broad term and different bugs react to different things. Certain plants may repel one type of bug yet attract another. Once you identify exactly what you are trying to keep away you may be able to find natural repellents.

Reply:I've never heard that about mosquitos. I plant Marigolds around my vegetable patch to keep rabbits away - that works. But I still have mosquitos...so I'm guessing it doesn't work for bugs.
Reply:I'd like to apologize up front because what follows is really not an answer. A friend told me to plant marigolds around my garden to keep out gophers. Guess what happened ? The gophers felled them before they could take root. I say "felled" because everything above ground remained untouched .
